Film School

so, what the heck is

.

.

.

Film School is our Sunday morning spiritual formation class.
We gather at 9:00 am in the basement of St. Thomas Church.
All 7th – 12th graders are

welcome to join us.
And yes, parents can come and see

what it’s all about too!
Film School gathers from mid-September thru mid-May.

.

.

so you just sit in the basement
and do this?

.

veg out movies

.

Well, not exactly.
We aren’t really all that interested in just watching movies…But we are interested in what story is being told. God is The Great Storyteller.
The Scriptures are filled with story after story (not myths, not legends, not fables) and these Stories tell of God’s People cooperating with God in order to make the world as God wants it to be.

.

.

Sometimes we get it right.
Sometimes we miss the mark.
As we watch films in Film School,
we talk about how the story being
told in the film lines up
(or doesn’t line up)
with The Story that God is telling in Scripture and in our world today.

.

OK, but why don’t you do a bible study like other sunday schools?

.

bible light shine down

.

We do.
We read the Bible in Film School.
Every. Single. Time.
Film School wouldn’t and couldn’t exist without the Bible. Films are the way that our culture today tells its Story and we must always take the opportunity to measure that against God’s Story.

.

What films have you done?

.

movie collage

.

There are too many to list here.
we’ve done animated films, dramas, comedies, super-hero, fantasy, etc. Again, we’re more interested in what Story is being told and not so much the special effects

(but those are awesome too!)

HERE IS THE LIST OF FILMS FOR THE
2010-2020 SEASON

.

.

Our First Film of the year will be Captain Marvel. We’ll discuss what it means to find our true identity, and how we can put the most important things first. Captain Marvel will show on September 22, 29, October 6, and 13.

.

.

Our Second Film of the year will be Yesterday. This incredible film deals with truth, lies, music, love, and a whole lot more. Yesterday will show on November 3, 10, 17, and 24.

.

.

Our Third Film will actually be a group of several “shorts” by Pixar Studios. We will gather in the Parish Hall and everyone is welcome. We’ll show 3 or 4 different shorts on December 15 and 22.

.

.

Our Fourth Film will be a series of short films from the Damah Film Festival. These short and powerful films will give us glimpses into issues such as grace, forgiveness, struggles, and unconditional love. We’ll watch a couple of them on January 19.

.

.

Our Fifth Film of the year will be The Hate U Give. We strongly encourage parents to join their 7th-12th graders for this film which deals with race, evil, and family. It will show on February 2, 9, 16, and 23.

.

.

Our Sixth Film will be The Goonies. This classic film stars many actors you know today but when they were much younger. Join us for a film that celebrates friendship, loyalty, and slick shoes! The Goonies will show on March 8, 15, 22, and 29.

.

.

Our Seventh and Final Film of the year will be Catch Me If You Can. This true story stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks and deals with truth, lies, relationships, and ethics. It will show on April 19, 26, May 3, and 10.

We look forward to seeing all 7th – 12th graders on Sunday mornings at 9:00 am
