Film School

so, what the heck isfilm-school-logo

anyway?

Film School is our Sunday morning spiritual formation class.
We gather at 9:00 am in the basement of St. Thomas Church.
All 7th – 12th graders are welcome to join us.
And yes, parents can come and see what it’s all about too!
Film School gathers from mid-September thru mid-May.
.

so you just sit in the basement & do this?

veg out movies

Well, not exactly.
We aren’t really all that interested in just watching movies.
But we are interested in what story is being told.
Our God is The Great Storyteller.
The Scriptures are filled with story after story
(not myths, not legends, not fables)
These Stories tell of God’s People cooperating with God
in order to make the world as God wants it to be.
Sometimes we get it right.  Sometimes we miss the mark.
As we watch films in Film School,
we talk about how the story being told in the film lines up
(or doesn’t line up)
with The Story that God is telling in Scripture and in our world today.
 .

why don’t you do a bible study like other sunday schools?

bible light shine down

We do.
We actually read the Bible in Film School
Every. Single. Time.
Film School wouldn’t & couldn’t exist without the Bible.
Films are the way that our culture today tells it’s Story.
And we must always measure that against God’s Story.
.

What films have you done?

movie collage

There are too many to list here.
But we do animated films, dramas, comedies, super-hero, fantasy, etc.
Again, we’re interested in what Story is being told
(not so much the special effects – but those are awesome too!)

.

Our Third Film of the year will be The Greatest Showman. “No one ever made a difference by being like everyone else.” This film is all about being exactly who you were created to be and not whatever the world or someone else tells you to be. The Greatest Showman will show on January 6, January 13, and January 20

.

.

Our Fourth Film of the year will be Wonder. This magical film deals with themes of kindness, acceptance, gifts, and prayer. Wonder will show on February 3, February 10, February 17, and February 24

.

.

Our Fifth Film of the year will be August Rush. Starring the incomparable Robin Williams, this film is, in all seriousness, all about the presence of God’s Spirit in all things (Ephesians 4:6). August Rush will show March 3, March 10, March 17, & March 24.

.

.

Our Sixth and Final Film of the year will be The Da Vinci Code. When it came out, it was a highly controversial film as many people felt it threatened The Church. This is the perfect film for Film School as we will listen to the story it tells and compare it to The Story God is telling through scripture. The Da Vinci Code will show April 7, April 14, April 28, May 12, and May 19

.

We look forward to seeing all 7th – 12th graders
on Sunday mornings at 9:00 am
